As part of our 25 years of research, we have developed a formula that will help you create good cover letters to use throughout your search, whether you are writing to a search firm, answering an ad, writing a cover letter for networking purposes, or contacting someone you don’t even know.
Most Five O’Clock Club letters use exactly the same format:
Paragraph 1: The opening.
Paragraph 2: A summary about yourself.
Paragraph 3: A few key accomplishments of interest to this target.
Paragraph 4: Ask for a meeting; state who will call whom.
Vanessa’s example below follows that exact format. Here, she is writing a cover letter to members of an organization to which she belongs. Note the use of bolding and underlining to make it easier for the reader to scan the letter for the important parts.
